Us skincare fanatics cannot get enough of Retinol. The “it” ingredient for erasing away past skin damage. Also known as Vitamin A, this superstar ingredient is something that almost every man and woman should include in their night-time skincare ritual. It is an ingredient that delivers results not instantly but over time. If used and applied correctly.
Originally only prescribed as a topical treatment for acneic skin. Retinol has expanded safely to become viable for everyone (not just for combating breakouts). Nowadays, you will find this all-round ingredient in nearly every product available on the market. High-street formulas often vary from 0.5% to 1%, depending on the brand and product.
You should never go in first with a high percentage of Retinol. Always start from the lowest concentration and work your way up slowly. Allow your skin to guide you, either way, there is a perfect dose of Retinol for everyone.
Did you know, Retinol isn’t just for treating blemish-prone skin. Formulators like to add this “top pupil of ingredients” inside creams, lotions, toners and cleansers for its cell-renewal benefits. Vitamin A communicates to other cells from within, teaching them to behave like a younger, healthier version. Furthermore, Retinol can also encourage new cells from forming.
This ‘must-have ingredient’ isn’t just available in one size. Retinol comes in different potencies and strengths to suit the individual. The most common formula, Retinyl palmitate is the least OTC Retinol. Often found in high-street formulas at a budget-friendly price. Retinaldehyde is slightly stronger to Retinyl Palmitate, both work just as equal.
These two formulas are ideal for “Retinol newbies” who are looking to combat the very first signs of skin ageing.
We also have Retinol, the strongest, most powerful form. Known to cause skin flakiness and sensitivity, retinol is best used on alternative days until skin builds a solid tolerance.
“A recent study by the British Journal of Dermatology has found that Bakuchiol is comparable to retinol in anti-ageing effects, and better tolerated than retinol…”
Not everyone can tolerate the powers of Retinol, even at a lower dose. Alternatively, natural Backuchiol offers similar benefits and often recommended instead. From personal experience, I have had great results from using a product containing Bakuchiol. It’s most certainly one to consider if Retinol doesn’t want to play the “nice guy”. Discover Bakuchiol here.
Here are 3 retinol-based products that I have personally tried and tested interchangeably. All three are reasonably-priced to suit the reader, that’s you!
Laboratoire SVR Ampoule Lift with Vitamin A
In fact, this is my first ever ampoule experience that felt somewhat like a serum. It’s lightweight, easily absorbed texture wowed me right over.
Firstly, an encapsulated form of Vitamin A at 0.2 drip feeds the skin for all-round effectiveness. Skin loving lipids – similar to those of skin cells – are continuously released into the heart of the epidermis.
Meanwhile, a concentrated 0.1 retinol formula at optimal tolerance for easily reactive skin. Both together create a powerful formula minus the irritation.
Key ingredients include Ethyl Ascorbic Acid 3.0. A superstable form of brightening Vitamin C, soluble in water and oil-based products. As equally important, skin conditioners Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7 and Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 smooth and erase the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Additionally, this Swedish invented brand added Shea Butter to help comfort and hydrate the skin.
This is a great option for those looking into using Retinol for the first time. Looking in the mirror my skin look and feels less textured (although I haven’t seen any drastic results, yet). However, time will only tell. This must-have ampoule is available here.
Medik8 Crystal Retinal 3
Spoilt for choice! Available in 4 different strengths and formulated with a stabilised version of Retinal.
Also known as Retinaldehyde, this next-generation form of vitamin A can increase collagen production, repair pigmentation and speed-up cellular renewal. Encapsulated in crystal complex cyclodextrin that releases retinal slowing throughout the night.
Blemish-busting, skin tone correcting, this best-selling product from Medik8 is one to consider if you’re looking for a night treatment with supreme reparative properties.
Interestingly, Cloudberry extract is not widely used in skincare so seeing this on the ingredients list was a nice surprise. Cloudberries contain natural antioxidants, known for their ability to fight the tale sign of ageing skin. We’re talking about those pesky fine lines and deep-set wrinkles.
Furthermore, we have hyaluronic acid and glycerin to hydrate the skin at the cellular level. In addition, combined together prevents the possible effect of skin dryness from the use of vitamin A.
The products indulging, satin-like cream texture infused with tonka bean and vanilla fruit extract. Immediately, this provides the user with a sensual, comforting experience, from start to finish.
Importantly, Medik8 has made this available for everyone. For super sensitive skin, start with the gentle-strength Retinal 1. Most importantly, slowly work your way up to the next strength until desired results are achieved.
During testing, my skin appeared healthy-looking and illuminated. Using the product for a month solid, past scarring from blemishes appeared less noticeable. Additionally, skin looked even-toned, uniformed from a distance and close-up. It’s a win-win in my books! Discover retinal at its finest here.
Transderma Vitamin A Night Serum.
Last but not least, I have been using this serum on and off for the past month or two. It’s a glorious texture that cocoons the skin thanks to Squalane. Secondly, a fatty molecule is included to support the skin’s moisture barrier and hydration.
As well as that, Squalane oil also fights off skin-damaging free radicals that contribute to the signs of skin ageing. With a mild exfoliating effect, this Vitamin A serum from Transderma can remove the top surface layer thus helping to encourage the cell renewal process.
Transderma chose Retinyl Palmitate as their Vitamin A choice for its potential to form into retinoic acid once absorbed. Created as a vehicle to enhance the delivery of other ingredients, Transderma blended Dimethyl Isosorbide into the mix. Moreover, Tocopheryl Acetate is added to support wound-healing and healthy skin.
In conclusion, you could quite mistake this serum as a nourishing facial oil. It has that “skin-pampering” feel to it. With a total of 4 ingredients, this night-time treatment suited for individuals who prefer a “no fuss’ skincare approach. Available here.
So there you have it, three recommended retinol treatments to add to your forever longing wishlist.
